Welcome to Freelance Source!

A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is someone who pursues a particular profession without making a long-term commitment to any one employer. This term was first used by Sir Walter Scott to describe a medieval mercenary warrior (or "free-lance").

The most common industries where freelancing is used include: writing, copywriting, computer programming, graphic design, consulting, and many other professional and creative services.

There are many different freelance practices used today and each of them may vary greatly. In general freelance workers and their clients will come to an agreement, written or verbal, as to how payment and services will be rendered. Freelancers will often charge by the day or hour and sometimes on a per-project basis. Most of the time payment will occur up front, as a percentage up front with the balance due on completion, or simply with the total balance due upon completion.

According to the US Department of Labor, there are approximately 10.3 million independent contractors working in the United States alone. The Internet has definitely increased the number of freelance opportunities and has introduced other services such as offshore outsourcing and crowdsourcing. The Internet has also allowed freelance opportunities to increase in the areas of software development, website design, information technology, and business process outsourcing.
